In pre-Colonial Mexico, hairless dogs were considered sacred and were often sacrificed or consumed in religious rituals. These practices nearly led to their extinction, but dedicated breeders worked to revive the breed in the mid-20th century. Now recognized in three sizes, the Xoloitzcuintle, or Mexican Hairless, remains relatively rare. Despite its limited mainstream appeal, this breed is affectionate, intelligent, and loyal, making it a rewarding companion for the right owner.
