About

The Whippet, the fastest domesticated animal relative to its weight, can reach speeds of up to 35 mph (56 km/h). With exceptional acceleration and agility, it can twist and turn at high speeds with ease. Developed in northern England in the late 19th century, the Whippet originated from a mix of Greyhounds and various terriers. Initially bred for hunting small game such as hare and rabbits, it became a favorite racing dog among working-class communities. Today, the breed is still used for racing, lure coursing, and agility trials but is mostly kept as a pet. Quiet, affectionate, and well-mannered, the Whippet is gentle with children but requires careful handling, as it is sensitive to rough play and harsh commands. Due to its fine, delicate coat, it needs extra warmth in cold weather but is virtually odor-free, even when wet. The breed has high energy levels and should have regular exercise, including free running in safe areas. While it generally gets along with other dogs, its strong hunting instincts make it prone to chasing cats and small animals. However, if raised together, a Whippet can coexist peacefully with a household cat. Although reserved with strangers, it makes a decent watchdog and is deeply loyal to its owners.
