Originally bred from mastiff-type dogs by monks at St. Bernard’s Hospice in the Swiss Alps, this breed has gained worldwide fame—sometimes exaggerated—as a mountain rescue dog. The St. Bernard is affectionate, dependable, and known for its calm demeanor. However, its immense size makes it an uncommon choice as a house pet, as it requires significant space, and its food consumption is considerable. The breed has two coat types: smooth and rough.
