This distinctive breed has played multiple roles in its homeland, where it is now known as the Perro de Agua. It may have arrived in Andalusia with traders from North Africa or Turkey and has been used for herding, hunting, and even towing boats in harbors. The Spanish Water Dog is intelligent and generally even-tempered but may be impatient with children. Once found only in southern Spain, it remained relatively unknown until the 1980s and is still a rare breed today.
