A smaller version of the Schweizer Laufhund, this breed was specifically developed for hunting in the high-mountain game reserves of the Swiss cantons. Unlike its swifter cousin, this stockier, short-barreled hound is better suited for tracking large game in enclosed areas. It has a remarkable sense of smell, allowing it to pursue wild boar, badger, and even bear. The Bernese Niederlaufhund comes in both a smooth-haired variety and a rarer rough-coated version with a small beard. Other Niederlaufhund varieties include the Schwyz, Jura, and Luzerne Niederlaufhunds.
