Developed in the 1940s by the Soviet Army, this powerful and resilient terrier was bred specifically for military work in the former USSR. The goal was to create a large, cold-resistant dog capable of working in harsh Russian winters. Among the breeds used in its development were the Giant Schnauzer, Rottweiler, and Airedale Terrier. Though still relatively rare, the Russian Black Terrier is gaining recognition beyond its homeland. Despite its imposing size and appearance, it is not naturally aggressive and, with responsible training, becomes a friendly and well-adjusted house dog.
