This richly coated breed, descended from the less-refined Scottish working shepherd dogs, is now highly admired both as a pet and in the show ring. While the Rough Collie’s history may trace back to Roman Britain, dogs of this type did not gain widespread attention until the 19th century. Queen Victoria played a significant role in popularizing the breed across Europe and the United States. Later, the highly intelligent film and television star “Lassie” cemented the Rough Collie’s reputation as one of the most beloved dogs of all time. Mild-tempered and tolerant of other dogs and pets, this breed is highly responsive to training and makes a protective yet affectionate companion. However, the people-loving Rough Collie readily welcomes visitors into the home, making it unsuitable as a guard dog. As an athletic breed, it enjoys engaging in canine sports such as agility trials. Though the herding instinct has not been entirely bred out, Rough Collies may attempt to “round up” friends and family, a habit that early socialization can help manage. Like all working breeds, the Rough Collie becomes restless if under-exercised or left alone for extended periods, which may lead to excessive barking. However, with a daily energetic run, it can thrive in a modest house or a spacious apartment. Its long, thick coat requires frequent grooming to prevent tangles, with additional grooming sessions needed during the twice-yearly shedding of the dense undercoat.
