In Romania’s rugged Carpathian region, shepherds depend on large, powerful dogs to guard their livestock in all weather conditions. Distinct regional breeding has resulted in three main types: the Carpatin, the Bucovina, and the Mioritic. All of these dogs are better suited to outdoor life than to domestic settings, and none is widely recognized as a companion pet. Romanian Shepherd Dogs are naturally territorial, highly protective, and inherently wary of strangers. They require significant physical and mental stimulation, as well as early socialization and firm training.
