The Rhodesian Ridgeback is instantly recognizable by the distinctive ridge of hair along its back, which grows in the opposite direction from the rest of its coat. Native to Zimbabwe (formerly Rhodesia), the breed likely traces its ancestry to dogs brought to southern Africa by European settlers. Historically used in packs to hunt lions, it is sometimes referred to as the African Lion Hound. Despite its formidable reputation, the Rhodesian Ridgeback is affectionate and kind-natured, making it a good family dog for experienced owners. However, it requires regular mental and physical stimulation to prevent boredom and behavioral problems.
