This French hunting dog excels at retrieving game from water and marshlands. Developed in the 19th century, the Pont-Audemer Spaniel is believed to have Irish Water Spaniel ancestry. Despite never gaining widespread recognition—even in France—the breed narrowly avoided extinction in the 20th century. Though still used for hunting, it also makes a gentle and affectionate house dog. Its curly, slightly tousled coat is relatively easy to maintain but does require regular grooming.
