The smallest of the German spitz-type breeds, the Pomeranian was selectively bred down to toy size in the 19th century. Intelligent and attention-seeking, it forms deep bonds with its owner and eagerly returns affection. Despite its small size, the Pomeranian is surprisingly fast and should be closely supervised when running freely. Although its thick coat looks high-maintenance, it is relatively easy to groom.
