Historical records indicate that hairless dogs have existed in South America since pre-Incan times. Some theories suggest they may have originated in China or Africa before reaching Peru. The Peruvian Hairless Dog comes in three sizes—miniature, medio, and grande—and carries a recessive gene responsible for its hairless appearance, which is often accompanied by missing teeth. Coated puppies sometimes appear in litters. Because of their sensitive skin, these dogs require protection from cold temperatures and sun exposure.
