Also called the Continental Toy Spaniel, the Papillon is a delightful companion breed. Frequently depicted in European court paintings, it was a particular favorite of Marie Antoinette. Known for its distinctive “butterfly-wing” ears and striking facial markings, the breed also has a drop-eared variety called the Phalène (French for “moth”). Affectionate and playful, these dogs love human company and enjoy both playtime and exercise. Early socialization with other dogs and strangers is essential. Their long, fine, silky coats require daily grooming to prevent matting.
