As its name suggests, this shaggy-coated hound was originally bred for otter hunting. Although its exact origins are unclear, similar dogs have worked in packs in England since at least the 18th century, with records of otter hunting dating back to the 12th century. When otters became a protected species and hunting them was banned in the UK in 1978, the Otterhound population declined significantly, and the breed is now considered rare, with fewer than 60 puppies registered by the Kennel Club each year. Small populations exist in countries such as the USA, Canada, and New Zealand.
