This breed is considered to be native to the UK, although it may have its earliest origins in various types of continental sheepdog. It was once the custom to completely dock the tails of Old English Sheepdogs, and the alternative name of Bobtail Sheepdog is still sometimes used. This big, strong dog requires a great deal of exercise and preferably wide open spaces to work off its energy. Its owner should be prepared to devote time and care to daily grooming, to prevent the heavy, shaggy coat from becoming tangled and matted.
