Named for its unique role in duck and goose hunting, this breed was used in a technique where hunters would throw sticks while remaining hidden. The dog, retrieving the sticks with playful energy but without barking, would lure curious birds into range for hunters to shoot. Once downed, the dog would retrieve them. These qualities—playfulness, quietness, and obedience—make it an excellent companion dog today. However, it is tireless and requires plenty of exercise.
