Although closely associated with the Canadian province that shares its name, the Newfoundland’s true origins remain unclear. Traditionally, it assisted fishermen by retrieving nets, and today, it is occasionally used in sea rescue operations. This breed has a natural protective instinct and is known for its gentle demeanor, especially with children. However, due to its sheer size, it is not well-suited to small living spaces.
