A relatively recent German breed, officially recognized since the 1950s, this terrier takes its name from its place of origin. It was developed from a Wire Fox Terrier and a locally owned dog, resulting in an affectionate, low-maintenance breed with a keen instinct for hunting rats. While cautious around strangers, it is playful and gentle with familiar people and pets. This eager-to-please breed also makes a dependable watchdog. It comes in two coat types: rough-haired and smooth-haired.
