Although not widely recognized as a companion dog, the Hovawart is gaining popularity. This breed has a long history, with its ancestors believed to have worked as farm dogs as far back as the 13th century. The modern Hovawart was developed in Germany during the early 20th century. Hardy and energetic, it thrives outdoors in all weather conditions but is also a loyal and affectionate family pet. While strong-willed, it is not difficult to train, though care should be taken when introducing it to other dogs.
