About

The Otterhound is a strong, energetic breed that, with sufficient exercise, adapts well to home life. Intelligent and friendly, it can be challenging to train, like many former pack hounds. Due to its large, boisterous nature, it is not ideal for small homes or families with young children or elderly members, as it may accidentally knock them over. Best suited to owners who enjoy outdoor activities, the Otterhound thrives with access to open spaces or a large garden. Bred for water-based hunting, it loves to swim and will happily splash in streams for hours. Its dense, coarse coat is slightly oily and water-resistant, requiring regular grooming to prevent tangling. Mud tends to cling to the fur in wet weather but can be brushed out when dry, while the breed’s long facial hair may need occasional washing.
