Capable of reaching speeds of 45 mph (72 km/h) in short bursts, the sleek and powerful Greyhound is built for speed. While the modern breed was developed in the UK, its ancestors may date back over 4,000 years, resembling dogs depicted in ancient Egyptian tombs. Originally bred for hunting hare, Greyhounds are now primarily used for racing. As pets, they require only moderate daily exercise and are content to lounge at home for the rest of the day.
