Like several French scent hounds, this breed’s name is self-explanatory: it is a tricolored dog with ties to English and French hunting traditions. The term “Great” refers to the size of the game it hunts, such as red deer, rather than the dog’s size. This hound inherits its coat and temperament from the Poitevin and its stamina and muscular build from the English Foxhound.
