The population of these large and powerful hounds is growing in France, which is unsurprising given their reputation for excelling in pack hunts for roe deer. While friendly, they typically bond more closely with their handler in a kennel setting than with an owner in a home environment. This breed may have links to the legendary Hound of Saintonge, a wolf-hunting dog of uncertain origins. The modern French White and Black Hound is a mix of Bleu de Gascogne and Gasçon Saintongeois bloodlines.
