The English Toy Terrier, formerly known as the Miniature Black and Tan Terrier, is the oldest British toy breed. It closely resembles the larger Manchester Terrier, differing mainly in size and its distinctively erect ears. This breed gained popularity as a town pet during Queen Victoria’s reign when toy dogs became fashionable. Originally bred as a rat-catcher, it retains its terrier instincts, shifting effortlessly between affectionate family pet and determined hunter. Loyal to its owner, it also makes an alert watchdog. Its small size means it requires less exercise than the Manchester Terrier, making it well-suited to city living.
