This classic gundog earned its name from its role in "springing" game—flushing birds into the air for hunters. Historically, spaniels were categorized by size: the larger "Springers" were used for flushing game, while the smaller "Cockers" specialized in woodcock hunting. Although the English Springer Spaniel was not officially recognized as a distinct breed until the early 20th century, it had long been known as the Norfolk Spaniel. Bred for endurance, the English Springer Spaniel excels in the field, working tirelessly in challenging terrain and harsh weather, even diving into freezing water when needed. A favorite among game hunters, it is also a friendly and adaptable family pet. It enjoys companionship—whether from children, other dogs, or even household cats—and can become vocal if left alone for extended periods. A non-working Springer requires long, vigorous daily walks and delights in activities such as retrieving, splashing in water, and rolling in mud. Intelligent and eager to please, this breed responds best to calm, authoritative training; harsh commands are counterproductive. With a love for the outdoors, the English Springer Spaniel requires weekly grooming to prevent matting and dirt buildup, along with regular trimming—especially on the ears and legs. There are two distinct types: working and show. Working Springers are typically lighter in build, often have docked tails, and are bred for field performance, while show dogs have a slightly heavier frame. Both varieties make excellent companions.
