Despite their small stature, Dachshunds require ample exercise and mental stimulation to stay happy and well-behaved. Strong-willed and independent, they often ignore commands when following a scent. While they will bark protectively at unexpected visitors, they are generally good with older children. The breed comes in three coat types—smooth-haired, long-haired, and wire-haired. Long-haired varieties require daily grooming. The Kennel Club (KC) recognizes two sizes: miniature and standard, while the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) categorizes them into three sizes based on chest circumference.
