Like other Poodles, this breed is friendly, intelligent, and well-balanced, making it a good companion and watchdog. The Corded Poodle has been selectively bred from separate lines of Standard Poodles for many years, though it has not yet been recognized as a distinct breed. Its distinctive corded coat was popular in the 19th century but is now rarely seen, even in France. Cording is more commonly found in herding breeds, as it provides protection from harsh weather and predators. Most Poodle coats will naturally form cords with encouragement, and once fully developed, they require relatively low maintenance.
