Despite its romanticized history, the Clumber Spaniel is believed to have originated in 18th-century France, where it was favored by aristocrats. During the French Revolution, some of these dogs may have been brought to England and further refined at Clumber Park, the estate of the Duke of Newcastle. The Clumber Spaniel is the heaviest-built of all spaniels, with a muscular, low-slung frame. Renowned for its calm and steady temperament, it was traditionally a prized gundog but is now more commonly kept as a pet. Gentle, obedient, and easy to train, this breed makes an excellent companion.
