The Boerboel originated from large mastiff-type dogs brought to South Africa’s Cape region by European settlers in the 17th century. Although affectionate toward family and friends, this breed is an exceptionally powerful guard dog. Due to its immense size and strength, it requires an experienced handler and early socialization.
