About

A sturdy and compact dog with a cheerful temperament, the Beagle resembles a miniature English Foxhound. Its exact origins are uncertain, but it likely descends from other English scent hounds such as the Harrier. From the 16th century onward, small beagle-like hounds were kept in England to hunt hare and rabbit. However, the modern Beagle’s breed standard wasn’t established until the 1870s. Since then, its popularity has remained strong—initially as a hunting dog and later as a family companion. This adaptable breed is also employed by law enforcement to detect drugs, explosives, and contraband. The Beagle’s friendly and patient nature makes it a great pet, provided it gets plenty of companionship and exercise. It does not cope well with long periods of isolation, which may lead to behavioral issues. As a true scent hound, it is highly active with a strong instinct for tracking. If left unsupervised in an inadequately fenced yard or allowed to roam off-leash, a Beagle can quickly disappear, following a scent for hours. Additionally, its loud bark can become disruptive if not properly managed. Fortunately, Beagles respond well to training, thriving under an owner who offers both affection and firm guidance. While they are good with children old enough to handle a dog responsibly, they may not be safe around small household pets. In the United States, Beagles are classified into two size categories based on height at the withers: under 33 cm (13 in) and between 33 cm (13 in) and 38 cm (15 in).
