This lively and intelligent breed descends from English Foxhounds brought to the New World. It was selectively bred to adapt to rugged terrain, hunting foxes by day and raccoons by night. With a smooth, effortless trot, this dog never seems to tire. Closely resembling the Treeing Walker Coonhound, it can track scents in two distinct ways—either by meticulously following an old trail for hours ("cold nose" tracking) or by swiftly pursuing a fresh, active scent. As a pet, it requires firm handling, but in return, it becomes a devoted companion and an excellent guard dog.
